Ranger is in Eastland County in Texas. Ranger has road access
on Interstate Highway 20. Ranger is positioned geographically between Fort
Worth and Abilene. Ranger currently has over three thousand residents. The
public school system is under the control of Ranger Independent School District.
The name Ranger is derived from the fact that a Texas Ranger camp was located
here in 1875. This was called Ranger Camp Valley and when the railroad laid
track two miles away the community moved the short distance and Ranger was
the chosen name for the new township. At this time Ranger relied heavily
on agriculture and grew large amounts of wheat. Many people came to Ranger
when oil was discovered in 1920. The Ranger Oil Boom Museum has historical
artifacts from this chapter in Ranger history. Today in Ranger one of the
biggest employers is Ranger Community College.
