Newcastle was named after the northeast of England coal town of Newcastle upon Tyne. This was due to the fact that in the early part of the 1900's Newcastle was a coal mining district. This Newcastle fortification was constructed in 1848 as one in a series of forts in the Newcastle area to offer protection to the settlers.
