Laredo is in County. Laredo got its name from San Agustin
de Laredo a Spanish city. Laredo sits on the northern shores of the Rio
Grande. In Laredo following the conclusion of the Texas War of Independence
the Rio Grande become recognized as the boundary between US and Mexico and
so Laredo was part of Texas. In 1881 Laredo was changed dramatically upon
the arrival of the railway and a considerable amount of trade followed between
Laredo and Nuevo Laredo in Mexico. The years that followed saw a rapid expansion
in the size of Laredo. There had long been a ferry crossing the Rio Grande
at Laredo but with the railway came a bridge crossing at Laredo in the 1880's.
The International Bridge that spans the Rio Grande today at Laredo carries
a huge volume of people.
