Hondo is the county seat of Medina County. The current estimated
number of residents in Hondo is ten thousand. San Antonio is about thirty
nine miles east of Hondo. The earliest people to settle in Hondo arrived
in 1881 and it was initially named Hondo City. Hondo became incorporated
as recently as 1942. The US Army constructed a training base for WW II navigators.
Today Hondo Airfield is still used for military training programs. Hondo
is home to the Texas National Guard Armory. Medina Lake is just a twenty
five minute drive from Hondo and Calavaras Lake and Braunig Lake are within
a sixty minute drive. These locations near Hondo provide many fishing, camping
and water activities.
