Houston is forty nine miles east of Hempstead on State Highway
6 and US 290. Hempstead is in Waller and is it is well positioned geographically
with nearby Houston International Airport for its transport links. Hempstead
is just twenty five minutes by road from Interstate 10. Hempstead is about
sixty minutes from Interstate 45. Hempstead is often referred to as the
water melon capital although it grows all types of vegetables as well as
fruits. Up until the 1940's Hempstead was one of the biggest shippers of
watermelon in the US. Hempstead got its name in honor of Dr. GB Hempstead
in 1856. The city of Hempstead was incorporated in 1858. The economic future
of Hempstead was further strengthened when the Houston and Texas Central
Railway came to Hempstead during that same year. The Hempstead economy today
relies on oil and gas as well as agriculture.
