Fort Stockton got its name in honor of Commodore R. F. Stockton
when a military fort was constructed here in 1858 - home to the 9th Cavalry
and Buffalo Soldiers. The first site was next to Fort Stockton Court House
stands today. Fort Stockton is in Pecos County. Fort Stockton is situated
on Interstate 10 between El Paso and San Antonio. Currently Fort Stockton
has over 8000 residents. The Fort Stockton museum is located in the Barracks
in the military buildings that remain of the original Fort Stockton. Just
a short walk from Fort Stockton Main Street this heritage site contains
Parade grounds and some reconstructions of the Fort Stockton Barracks, Guard
House and Officer's Row. Nearby to Fort Stockton is the Big Bend National
Park. This is in the Chihuahuan Desert region of Texas and across into parts
of New Mexico.
