El Paso was originally called El Paso del Norte the named referring to
the Spanish for - The Pass of the North. In 1848 at the conclusion of
the Mexican War El Paso came under US jurisdiction. Fort Bliss was constructed
near to El Paso within twelve months. El Paso was incorporated as the
city of El Paso in 1873. The future of the El Paso economy was further
strengthened when in 1881 the Southern Pacific Railroad came through the
city of El Paso. At this time El Paso was the typical Wild West City of
cowboys and gun fights. In 1911 El Paso saw a huge influx of people crossing
the Mexican border after the Revolution. This brought a cultural legacy
that is still evident in El Paso today. Local visitor attraction the El
Paso Museum located in Wilderness Park has many collections of historical
