Crockett was named by a family who gave land for the town
and who knew Davy Crockett from their home city of Tennessee. It was incorporated
as the city of Crockett in 1837. At the time of the Civil War conscripts
for the Confederate army were trained in Crockett. In the early 1870's the
Crockett economy was booming as the railway allowed it to transport its
large timber supplies. Crockett is the county seat of Houston County. Crockett
has a population of over 7500. Crockett is 106 miles north of Houston. Tyler
is 70 miles to the north of Crockett.
