Columbus is the county seat of Colorado County. Houston is
situated 75 miles east of Columbus. The city of Columbus is at the point
where Highway 71 crosses with Interstate 10. Columbus was originally called
Beeson's Ferry but was renamed as some of the settlers had previously lived
in Columbus in Ohio. Columbus was incorporated after the Civil war in 1866.
More than 80 medallions have been erected in sites in Columbus by the State
Historical Survey Committee. The medallions provide an insight to some important
Columbus buildings from the past including the Rangers of Austin's Colony,
Columbus Tap Railway, Columbus Female Seminary and Columbus Railway Hospital.
