Clifton began as Old Clifton following the building of a mill
soon after the Civil War on the Bosque River. Like many towns Clifton had
to move to a better location further south next to the railway track from
the Old Clifton site to where Clifton stands today when Gulf, Colorado and
Santa Fe Railroad constructed a new depot in the 1880's. Clifton was settled
by mainly from Norway and some from Germany. Today Clifton still acknowledges
its past history with its annual Norwegian Christmas Tour around Clifton
homes and building that still reflect their Norwegian heritage. The Bosque
Conservatory is found in the former Clifton College Hall. Clifton visitors
will enjoy this performing theatre and arts center.
