The City of Clarendon is the county seat of Donley County
in the Texas Panhandle. Clarendon is on Highways 70 and 287. Clarendon is
51 miles southeast from Amarillo. One theory about the name Clarendon is
that it was named after the town of Clarendon which is in England to please
the British backers who had invested money in the settlement. Clarendon
was originally a settlement that grew up near Red River but when the Denver
City and Forth Worth Railroad laid its track six miles to the south of Clarendon
all the townsfolk moved to this new site in 1887. Clarendon prospered as
a railway division point. It was incorporated as the city of Clarendon in
1901. To the northeast of Clarendon lies Clarendon Lake while Clarendon
Airport lies to the southeast.
