Carthage is the county seat of Panola County and has over
23,000 residents. Pulaski which is a mere 15 miles from Carthage was once
the county seat however in 1848 it was decided that Carthage should become
the county seat as Carthage was more centrally located. Major Holland gave
Carthage its name and it was incorporated as the city of Carthage in 1902.
The discovery of oil and gas in Carthage saw the demise of agriculture as
the main industry in Carthage. By the 1940's Carthage was often referred
to as the 'Gas Capitol of the World'. Carthage was also once pronounced
as being 'The Best Small Town in Texas'
