The city of Canton is the county seat of Van Zandt County,
Texas. Van Zandt county was created by using land that was previously Henderson
County. It was named after Isaac Van Zandt a Congressional member of the
Republic of Texas. Canton is served by the Canton Independent School District.
The city of Canton has city area of almost 15 square kilometers. Canton
has a community of over 5000 people. Canton has over 325,000 visitors for
their ever popular Canton First Monday Trade Days - this dates back to when
the circuit judges used to visit traditionally on the first Monday of the
month - these days brought many people to the city of Canton to watch the
proceedings and carry out their business. Canton retains this First Monday
Trade Day tradition however the event is no longer in Canton on a Monday
but on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday preceding the First Monday
of each month.
