Big Spring is the county seat of Howard County and was incorporated in
1907. The city of Big Spring stands in a rocky gorge at the convergence
of the Caprock Hills and the Edwards Plateau. Currently Big Spring has
over 35,000 residents. It gets its name Big Spring due to the fact that
it was a large watering hole for buffalo and cattle and this big spring
was often used as a stopping point on the Overland trail from California
to Santa Fe. This meant that Big Spring became a landmark for cattlemen.
There was considerable disagreement over Big Spring with the Shawnee and
Comanche Indians with both trying to make use of this big spring as a
useful and valuable resource. Nature enthusiasts are naturally drawn to
Big spring as it has much to offer in terms of recreational activities.
Big Spring has over 800 acres of parklands open to the public.
