The city of Beaumont is the county seat of Jefferson County, Texas. Beaumont has a current population of over 115,000. Beaumont is situated 84 miles east of Houston. Beaumont is also 270 miles west of New Orleans. Beaumont lies on the coastal plain of Texas about thirty miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Beaumont with its Intra-coastal Waterways and the Mississippi River connect Beaumont with a vast inland waterway system serving such cities as Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Memphis and Louisville. Lamar University is located in Beaumont and has an enrollment of about 8000 students. For over 100 years Beaumont has been home to the South Texas State Fair.
