Bastrop is the county seat of Bastrop County. Downtown Austin
is 29 miles northwest from Bastrop. Austin International Airport is within
22 miles of Bastrop. The city of Bastrop sits on the Colorado River. Bastrop
sits on the junction of Interstate 21, 71 and 95. The first settlement in
Bastrop was in the early 1800's and it owes its development to Baron de
Bastrop from whom the City of Bastrop gained its name. Bastrop was incorporated
in 1837 under the laws of Texas. The economy of Bastrop was in those days
boosted due to its proximity to Austin and the Lost Pine Forest was used
to supply timber. Bastrop also supplied timber to San Antonio and also into
Mexico. Today Bastrop has over 75,000 residents.
