Athens is the county seat of Henderson County, Texas and was
incorporated as the City of Athens in 1856. Situated in East Texas, Athens
is only 74 miles from Dallas and 108 miles from Waco. Athens was named by
a former resident Mrs Dull Averiette in honor of Athens in Greece who hoped
the name of Athens would assist the city in becoming the cultural focus
of Henderson County. Athens new High School is now built on the same land
were Athens was given its historic name. Athens is regarded and widely known
as the "Black-Eyed Pea Capital." To immortalize the black-eyed
boom days, in 1971 Athens hosted the initial Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree. Athens
has many quality restaurants in downtown Athens to sample and enjoy fine
foods
