Located in the center of the Texas Panhandle, the Amarillo metropolitan
area has an estimated population of over 200,000 spread across four counties.
Amarillo has also had a number of nicknames over the years. 'Helium Capital
of the World' was one Amarillo nickname that was used when it had highly
productive helium plants. 'Rotor City USA' was another Amarillo name used
when it was building the Osprey aircraft. Amarillo has also been called
'The Yellow Rose of Texas." Amarillo is one of the larger cities
in the State of Texas. The Amarillo area offers a unique mixture of American
heritage with working Amarillo ranches from the nineteenth century alongside
a prosperous modern day Amarillo economy. One of the largest meat packing
areas in the United States is located in Amarillo. Well known Amarillo
tourist attractions The Cadillac Ranch and Big Texan Steak Ranch are both
located in Amarillo on old U.S. Route 66, which passes through the city
of Amarillo.
