Alvin is located in northern Brazoria County, Texas. Pasadena
is 18 miles to the north of Alvin while Houston is 24 miles to the north
of Alvin. The current population of Alvin is 22,000. Alvin has a history
that owes much to the cattle industry. The Santa Fe Railroad Company extended
into this region in 1879 and one of its employees Alvin Morgan built a house
here and so Alvin acquired its name. The discovery of oil in Brazoria County
in the 1930's was an important factor in the Alvin economy. Rice farming
was introduced into the Alvin area in 1948. Many historic buildings in Alvin
are now being modernized and provide new life for local Alvin businesses.
