The City of Alamo has a population of around 15,000 residents.
Alamo City has nothing at all to do with the Alamo which is located in San
Antonio. Alamo City gets its name from the fact that it is built on land
previously belonging to Alamo Land and Sugar Company. The City of Alamo
is some 345 miles from Houston and 300 miles from Austin and is located
in the Southern Texas region called the Rio Grande Valley and Alamo is almost
in the center of this valley. The Rio Grande valley is made up of four counties
- Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy. This area including Alamo has seen
considerable construction and development over the past years and Alamo
has many hotels and restaurants to welcome its visitors. The Refuge to the
Valley is another name often given to the City of Alamo as it is the gateway
to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge which regularly sees over 150,000
nature visitors annually. The Alamo Country Club is also a popular winter
destination for many Alamo tourists with a wide range of recreational facilities.
